Info
|
The Norwood Inn is conveniently located on Highway 145 in the
center of downtown Norwood, next door to the grocery store.
 |
Located near the four corners region
in southwestern Colorado, Norwood sits on top of Wrights Mesa
surrounded by high alpine, wild desert and rugged canyons.
From its earliest days Norwood
has been a timber, ranching and mining support center for many
communities on Wrights Mesa, which today has a population of
about 1,200.
Ranching, horse breeding, racing,
outfitting and rodeo have remained central to the community.
Norwood's indoor horse arena and event center is the sixth
largest in Colorado.
The center of an outdoor
paradise, Norwood affords easy access to the Uncompaghre
National Forest, the San Miguel and Dolores rivers and the La
Sal, San Juan and San Miguel mountains.
Area outdoor activities include
lake and fly-fishing, rafting, biking, hiking and horseback
riding. Winter sports include snowmobiling, cross-country
skiing, snowshoeing and ice climbing.

ABOUT
NORWOOD
Nestled
atop Wright's Mesa at 7000 feet, Norwood has spectacular vistas of high
alpine and wild desert country. Far horizons are ringed by the La Sal
Mountains in the west, the Uncompahgre Plateau to the north, the San
Juan and San Miguel Mountains in the east and, to the south... Norwood's
own jewel... the Lone Cone. Rugged desert canyons etch the landscape
between.
Throughout years of change and growth, Norwood has retained its "old
west small town charm". Travelers can pause for a look through our shops
where local artisans sell their wares, dine on fine food, lodge for the
night and enjoy our small town hospitality.
GETTING HERE
Norwood is only 33 miles west of
Telluride... a roughly 45-minute drive. Follow Colorado 145 West (along
the Unaweep-Tabaguache Scenic byway). You'll enjoy the scenic
forty-minute drive down the red rock-rimmed San Miguel River Canyon to
Norwood. As you top out on Norwood Hill, you will gasp at majestic
12,700 foot Lone Cone Mountain as it stands silent sentinel over
Wright's Mesa. As the sun sets beautifully behind the Blue and La Sal
Mountains to the west in Utah, you will feel as if you are in a wide
valley surrounded by mountains. Just a couple more miles to the ranching
community of Norwood, where western hospitality awaits you.
HISTORY
An
oasis in the wilderness, Wright's Mesa has a long history of many
peoples... Ute hunters, Spanish explorers and questing mountain men. No
one settled here until 1879 when Edwin Joseph homesteaded Norwood. In
the late 1800's ranchers in the Paradox Valley would move their herds
through Norwood and "stock up" before moving to the Lone Cone pastures.
Later, as mining in the nearby mountains grew prosperous, Norwood became
the timber and ranching support community for many of the neighboring
towns. Today, this one-time supply post for the stockmen of Paradox
Valley remains a support community for the surrounding area and a
variety of outdoor enthusiasts. |
